By George Bernard Shaw. In New Hampshire during the Revolutionary War, Dick Dudgeon is scorned as the town drunkard and village outcast. Yet, when the British soldiers look to arrest the minister for trial and imminent hanging, Dick stands in his place and is taken away. When the minister hears about the heroic deed, he hurriedly flees. Will the minister’s wife, Judith, be able to save Dick? Why did the supposedly immoral Dick give himself up so unselfishly while the minister seems to have fled for his life? A melodrama full of action and suspense, this show works well for school, community, and professional theatre audiences.
