Arms and the Man

Arms and the Man: George Bernard Shaw's comedy is named after a line in Virgil's Aeneid. Set in the 1885 Serbo-Bulgarian War, young Bulgarian Raina Pekoff, engaged to war hero Sergius Saranoff, confronts her own romantic ideals when Captain Bluntschli, a Swiss mercenary for the Serbian Army, seeks her protection for the night. Sergius returns home from war and begins to flirt with servant girl Louka. Raina hides her growing frustrations with him and her life until Bluntschli returns, ostensibly to return Rain'a coat.
