Carnival

Carnival: A magical and incredibly human look at love, this 1960's musical, based on Paul Gallico's story and Helen Deutsch's screenplay for Lili, opens on a bare stage as a troupe of Carnival workers set up in their next town. Orphaned Lili comes to the carnival in search of a friend of her father's and an offer of home. Delighted with one of his magic tricks, she falls for the magician Marco the Magnificent and joins the troupe. Treated with increasing cruelty by the bitter, crippled puppeteer Paul Berthalet, Lili takes refuge in her act with four puppets, Carrot Top, Horrible Henry, Marguerite and Reynaldo the Fox, who come to treat her both in and out of the act with tenderness and love. Through the puppets and a beautiful score, Lili and Paul slowly learn to communicate honestly with each other. Music and lyrics by Bob Merrill with a book by Michael Stewart.
