Sister Act

Sister Act: Music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, and book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner. Based on the 1992 box office smash film, Sister Act is a musical comedy that follows the unusual journey of disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier. Upon witnessing a murder committed by her gangster boyfriend, Deloris reports the crime to the police and is placed in protective custody. She is then hidden in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be found: a convent! At first, Deloris finds herself at odds with the rigid lifestyle and the high-strung Mother Superior. Deloris is able to use her unique disco dance moves and singing to reenergize the choir, making them a hit in the community. Word of the choir’s success spreads and reaches Deloris’s boyfriend and the mob, who descend on the convent to settle the score. However, Deloris and her newfound feisty sisters aren’t going down so easily.

Sister Act is based on the 1992 film by the same name starring Whoopi Goldberg. With music by famed Disney score and songwriter Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, and book by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner (with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane), the musical adaptation of Sister Act premiered regionally in 2006 in Pasadena, California. The original West End production, produced by Stage Entertainment and Whoopi Goldberg herself, premiered three years later in 2009 at the London Palladium and starred Patina Miller as Deloris. A newly revised adaptation of the show premiered on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre in 2011. The show received multiple Tony Award nominations for the 2011 season including for Best Musical.

Sister Act follows the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva who after witnessing a murder committed by her gangster boyfriend, is put into protective custody in the one place where her vengeful ex is least likely to find her – a convent. Under her new identity as a nun, Deloris is frequently at odds with her new rigid lifestyle and the strict Mother Superior. However, Deloris soon breathes new life into the convent by using her disco moves and vocal talent to inspire the choir. In doing so, Deloris also consequently blows her cover. Soon enough, her boyfriend and his gang are on her tail, but the gang shortly find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her newfound sisterhood.

The story begins on Christmas Eve, as Deloris is performing in a nightclub owned by her gangster boyfriend, Curtis “Shank” Jackson (“Take Me to Heaven”). After her performance, Deloris can barely contain her excitement, for she believes that Jackson has arranged for her to be introduced to a record producer. She is soon let down to learn that this arrangement was too good to be true, and to make matters worse, Jackson informs her that he cannot join her for Christmas. He gives Deloris a coat as consolation, however she discovers that it used to belong to Jackson’s wife. Angry and hurt, Deloris confides in her backup singers, Michelle and Tina about her dreams of being a star through the song “Fabulous, Baby!” Deloris resolves to break up with Jackson and leave Philadelphia to pursue her dreams of stardom. When she goes to breakup with him, Deloris witnesses Jackson and his crew execute one of their members who they believed to be a rat to the cops. Deloris flees in horror and Jackson orders his men to catch her.

From the very beginning of your show, Deloris’ wild world will come to life onstage with the help of The Costumer’s Sister Act rental costumes! Deloris will charm audiences from the start in a flashy disco outfit to match her performative personality. Exaggerated 70’s lounge singer wigs are also available to complete Deloris’ disco diva look! Accompanied by her equally ostentatiously outfitted back-up singers, Deloris will look like she stepped right out of a 1970’s disco club! Curtis Jackson will look like the archetypal 70’s gangster in his colorful period-style suit and open collar shirt.

Returning to the action, Deloris flees to the nearest police station. She tells the desk chief about what happened, and recognizes him as her old friend from school, Eddie. After the two reminisce about how Deloris used to call him “Sweaty Eddie” back in their school days, Eddie decides to put Deloris in the witness protection program. He resolves that the place where Jackson is least likely to find her is a convent. Thus, Deloris is to become a sister at The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith.

Deloris is less than excited to learn from the Mother Superior that contact is limited with the outside world at her new home, and that drinking, smoking, and wearing any of her old less appropriate clothing is forbidden. Adapting to her new pious life will pose quite a challenge for Deloris, especially with Jackson still on her tail.

As the show goes on, The Costumer will continue to provide rental costumes that fulfill your production’s every need. Sargent Eddie will look like a true officer of the law in his official looking police uniform, complete with badge and hat. Deloris will undergo quite the transformation as she is forced to ditch her beloved disco ensemble for a conservative nun habit. With her black gown, black reversible tabard, cord belt, white wimple, collar, and black veil, Deloris will become a real sister of the church!
