South Pacific: Rodgers, Hammerstein and Joshua Logan created this highly acclaimed 1949 musical based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer winning novel, Tales from the South Pacific. Set on a small island in the South Pacific during World War II, the story explores several variations of racism, primarily focusing on the young American Navy nurse Nellie Forbush as she falls in love with one of the local plantation owners, the older Frenchman Emile de Becque. Nellie and the American soldiers face the worst of themselves as they interact with the Melanesian culture around them and are transformed from a casual outpost to the front line.
