H.M.S. Pinafore

H.M.S. Pinafore: Also titled The Lass that Loved a Sailor, Gilbert and Sullivan's satirical classic takes place aboard the eponymous naval ship. Captain Corcoran's daughter Josephine and low-born sailor Ralph Rackstraw love each other without the other's knowledge. Out of pride, Josephine says nothing of her feelings and allows, albeit unhappily, the First Lord of Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter, to court her. When Sir Joseph, however, arrives on board, he espouses his views on the equality of sailors and those of high station, inspiring Ralph to confess his love to Josephine. The two soon hatch a plan to elope, but are thwarted by fellow sailor Dick Deadeye. In true Savoy Opera style, a surprise reveal by bumboat woman Little Buttercup unites the young couple.
