The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music: Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II collaborated with writers Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse to create this musical adaptation of Maria von Trapp's memoirs, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. A young and disobedient postulant at the Nonnberg Abbey in Austria, Maria Rainer, is sent to be the governess of a widowed captain's seven children to help her decide if she is ready for monastic life. Maria bonds with the children and falls in love with the captain as the Third Reich of Germany annexes Austria and the family is forced to flee.

Rental Costumes for The Sound of Music

            When you request a FREE costume plot you will receive a show specific listing by act and scene with what costumes are required for the scene along with a description of the costumes for the entire show.             The Sound of Music debuted on Broadway in 1959. With music by Richard Rodgers and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Lindsay and Crouse created the musical adaption of Maria von Trapp’s memoirs, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Winning five Tony Awards including Best Picture, out of nine nominations. The Sound of Music was the last collaboration of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Hammerstein passing away only nine short months after the show took to Broadway.

            The production opens to every director’s dream, a young Postulant, Maria Rainer, alone on a mountain side singing the hit song "The Sound of Music". Maria lives at Nonnberg Abbey under the guidance and direction of Mother Abbess and Sister Berthe. This troubled Postulant is torn between the wonders of Mother Nature and Monastic life. Mother Abbess suggests Maria spend time outside the Abbey walls. Assigning Maria to act as the governess to seven children of widower, Captain Georg von Trapp. Her first meeting with the children is much like a Military Roll Call. Children march in one by one each to their own boatswain’s call, they present themselves by name and age, all with identical uniforms…. Outfits. At this moment Maria knows she’s not inside the familiar walls of Nonnberg Abbey.

            From one scene to the next, The Costumer will provide every actor with quality costumes accurate to the style of the time period and support the creative vision of the director. The opening scene will leave the audience wanting more as the actors are transformed into a sea of Nuns with matching black Habits singing in unison "Dixit Dominus". Maria’s iconic Postulant apron will twirl freely as she spins around stage to the memorable melody of "The Sound of Music".

            The Costumer will not let you down, ensuring that your Von Trapp Children look ship shape for their introduction scene. Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl will all stand tall in their iconic matching sailor outfits. These rental costumes will make any audience members heart skip a beat as they are brought back to the memorable movie and Broadway scene.

            The story continues as Maria uncovers the uniqueness of each member of the Von Trapp Family. Discovering their Favorite Things and learning what Sixteen going on Seventeen is like. The Costumer can provide iconic rental costumes for all of the Von Trapp children such as the classic play clothes made from Maria’s bedroom drapes. Want to add the drapes to your set too? The Costumer has the drapes as part of the rental package.

            During Maria’s time in the Von Trapp family house she finds herself falling in love. Falling in love with the children, the lifestyle and the Captain. Maria and the Captain look forward to a new life together without the oppression of the Third Reich. Maria and Captain von Trapp are married by Mother Abbess with all seven children at their side. The Costumer will bring their wedding to life with matching light blue bridesmaids dresses with hair flowers, traditional and iconic Naval Uniform for the Captain and of course the beautiful wedding dress with matching veil for Maria. This scene will leave the audience breathless and a little choked up as the reprisal of Maria is heard from the Abbey nuns.

            This is only a small glimpse into The Sound of Music and the story of the Von Trapp’s. The tale will unfold as your artistic direction propels your cast to Climb Every Mountain.
