Disney’s The Little Mermaid is based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved fairytales and the beloved animated Disney film. The musical adaptation features music by Alan Menken from the original 1989 film with lyrics by Howard Ashman, and additional lyrics for the stage adaptation by Glenn Slater, and book by Doug Wright. The Broadway production began its stage life with tryouts in Denver, Colorado in July and September of 2007, before beginning previews on Broadway in November of that year. The musical officially opened on January 10, 2008 and ran for over a year and a half. The original Broadway production earned nominations for Best Original Score and Best Lighting Design of a Musical at the 2008 Tony Awards. The musical was subsequently modified with a new book and new direction elements introduced by Glenn Casale in 2012. The redeveloped version of the show is the basis for the most current edition of the musical available for licenses by Disney Theatrical.

The Little Mermaid follows the classic story of King Triton’s mermaid daughter, Ariel, as she longs to pursue the dashing human Prince Eric on the world above the sea. In order to pursue the man of her dreams, Ariel makes a bargain with the evil sea witch, Ursula. However, Ursula is deceptive, and the deal is not what it seems, causing Ariel to rely on the help of her colorful sea critter friends to restore order to their undersea kingdom.

The story begins as the handsome Prince Eric, accompanied by his nautical expert adviser, Grimsby, and their crew sail along the ocean in search of treasure. Eric and the crew discuss the mythical and mysterious “merfolk” that supposedly lurk under the waves below. While Grimsby expresses his desire for Eric to return to court, take up his birthright and ascend to the throne as king, Eric has other desires. The young prince is drawn to the sound of a beautiful voice singing. Despite protests from Grimsby and the crew, Eric commands that they sail ahead to find the source of the mysterious yet alluring song (“Fathoms Below”).

The source of the song comes from leagues below the surface on the ocean floor in the merfolk kingdom of King Triton. It is there that a concert is being held to celebrate the thwarting of a coup attempt by the villainous sea witch, Ursula. Court composer, Sebastian the crab, has just composed a song to be performed by the lovely daughters of King Triton (“Daughters of Triton”). The concert grinds to a halt however when Triton’s youngest daughter, Ariel, is nowhere to be found when it is time for her solo. The beautiful and fiery-haired Ariel is instead obliviously swimming around the surface admiring her latest addition to her collection mystifying objects from the surface world: a fork. Ariel reveals her yearnings for leaving the ocean and living among the human world on land (“The World Above”). Ariel is soon joined by her best friend, Flounder, and the two visit Scuttle the seagull and his accompanying flock to inquire about all of the strange human objects that Ariel has collect, which he explains rather erroneously (“Human Stuff”).

From the very start of Ariel’s nautical adventure, The Costumer will ensure that your audience is immediately transported to this magical world under the sea with the help of our fabulous rental costumes! Rental costumes for The Little Mermaid cover the entire cast of characters, from merfolk to humans and every creature in between! Prince Eric will appear before the audience at the top of the show as a dashing colonial mariner in a billowing white peasant shirt adorned with a sharp red sash, black pants, and tall black boot tops. Grimsby will resemble that of quintessential colonial royal advisor in a dark three-piece colonial suit, complete with a jabot and era-appropriate wig.

In juxtaposition to sea-faring men above the waves, the citizens of the aquatic merfolk kingdom will be brimming with life and color with their fabulous costumes! The beautiful Ariel will be adorned in a shimmery turquoise mermaid skirt complete with The Costumer’s handmade mermaid tail belt overlay and seashell bra. Additionally, The Costumer offers wigs for Ariel’s luxurious and iconic long red hair. King Triton will be a commanding presence in his green merman pants with attached fins, matching belt and gauntlets, and royal crown. To complete Triton’s look, add a padded muscle shirt and long gray dreadlock wig to your rental order! The rest of The Little Mermaid’s sea creature cast will look equally as fantastical in their ensembles. From Flounder to Sebastian, Flotsam to Jetsam, and Scuttle to Ursula, The Costumer has got you covered.

Although Ariel soon returns to the seafloor from her time near the surface, her journey has only just begun. She is soon forced to reconcile with her father’s anger and xenophobia towards the surface world, broker a dangerous deal with Ursula, try and win over Prince Eric, and ultimately, save her kingdom.
