Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical based on the songs of ABBA, the Swedish international pop music group sensation that dominated the charts throughout the 1970s and early 80s. The musical features all songs and lyrics written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA, as well as its book by Catherine Johnson. Andersson and Ulvaeus were involved with the stage production from its very inception, and ABBA singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad was one of the show’s financial backers. The plot follows a young bride-to-be as she invites three men to her wedding in Greece to determine which one of them is her father. The musical opened in the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre on April 6, 1999, and its Broadway incarnation opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on October 18, 2001. The show was a smash hit and closed on Broadway on September 12, 2015, making it the ninth-longest running show in Broadway history. Additionally, the musical was adapted into a popular feature film in 2008.

The musical begins with an orchestral overture playing an instrumental medley of some of ABBA’s classic hit songs. The curtain then rises to reveal the setting of the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi during the summer of 1999, where 20-year-old Sophie Sheridan is preparing to marry her fiancé, Sky. Sophie expresses that she wishes her father could walk her down the aisle at her wedding, however she has never met him and does not know who he could possibly be (“Prologue”). Sophie finds a clue to her father’s identity when she comes across her mother Donna’s old diary and discovers entries her mother made about intimate dates with three men: Sam Carmichael, Bill Austin, and Harry Bright (“Honey, Honey”). Sophie is led to believe that one of these three men must be her father. Determined to find out which one of the men truly is her dad and have that man walk her down the aisle, Sophie sends each of them an invitation to her wedding three months prior, signing each letter in her unsuspecting mother’s name.

Later on, at her taverna, Donna begins receiving wedding guests. The first to arrive are her two long-time best friends and former girl group partners, the rich and thrice divorced, Tanya, and the unmarried and carefree, Rosie. The three former members of “Donna and the Dynamos” lovingly greet one another and catch up about each other’s lives (“Money, Money, Money”).

From the very beginning of this pop musical romp, The Costumer will ensure that your audience is immediately transported to the white sandy beaches of Kalokairi with the help of our fabulous rental costumes! Each character will look as though they have been spending their days enjoying the beautiful climate of a Mediterranean Greek island with our costumes. Sophie will appear before the audience in the Prologue in a fashionable summer dress, and her mother Donna will later emerge at her taverna in a colorful and funky-styled blouse and a trusted pair of overalls. The affluent Tanya will make her presence known in a stylish sun dress, while the carefree Rosie will arrive at the taverna in a more casual and toned-down blouse and pants. All the while, Chorus members onstage will further draw your audience into the atmosphere of the Greek island, with Male ensemble members in Greek fishermen’s’ hats, work shirts and colorful neck scarfs. Additionally, Female Chorus members will only enhance this effect with bright flowing skirts and blouses, and vibrant head scarfs.

Later in the day, Donna is surprised when her three ex-lovers arrive on the island: Sam the American architect, Harry the British banker, and Bill the Australian former writer and adventurer. Sophie welcomes the three men and convinces them not to tell her mother that she invited them (“Thank You for the Music”). Donna is shocked to see all three of her exes all at once and subsequently runs off in tears (“Mamma Mia”). The distressed Donna explains the situation to Tanya and Rosie who in turn cheer their friend up (“Chiquitita”). Tanya and Rosie convince their best friend that she can still be the young woman she once was (“Dancing Queen”).

Upon her possible fathers arriving, Sophie is left feeling confused, for she thought she would know her father from the very moment that she saw him. Without confessing to what she has done, she tries to explain her feelings to Sky. In turn, Sky tells her that he will be the only man she will ever need in her life (“Lay All Your Love on Me”). Later at Sophie’s hen night, Donna, Tanya and Rosie don their old Donna and the Dynamos costumes and perform “Super Trouper.” Sam, Bill, and Harry walk in on the party by accident and attempt to leave, but the ladies persuade them to stay (“Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)”). Soon enough, Sophie begins explaining to each of the men why they were all invited to her wedding. It is then up to Sophie, Donna, and the three possible dads to reconcile with their pasts, rekindle old bonds, and create new ones – all while having a little bit of fun along the way!

Each of the potential fathers will be dressed according to their personalities and personal tastes, and Donna and the Dynamos will look like they just stepped out of the disco-era in their glamorous and glitzy ABBA-styled jumpsuits!
