Matilda The Musical is the stage musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic 1988 children’s novel, Matilda. The story follows the title character, a precocious 5-year-old girl who is quite the bookworm and discovers that she has telekinetic powers. Matilda uses her intelligence and newfound powers to stand up to her cold-hearted parents and abusive school headmistress, and helps her kind-hearted teacher reclaim her life. The musical was adapted by Dennis Kelly and features music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. The musical premiered on the West End in November 2011 after a twelve-week trial run staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-upon-Avon the year prior. Matilda received its Broadway premiere in April 2013 at the Shubert Theatre. The musical has experienced widespread critical acclaim and box-office popularity, reflected by winning seven Oliver Awards in 2012, including for Best New Musical, and five Tony Awards, such as Best Book of a Musical.

The story begins with a chorus of children boasting about being their parents’ miracles, while the obsessive amateur ballroom dancer, Mrs. Wormwood, gives birth to a baby girl who she names Matilda (“Miracles”). The doctor claims that Matilda is the most beautiful child that he has ever seen, however Matilda’s mother is more preoccupied about the dance contest that she missed. Mr. Wormwood, the television-addicted used car salesman who is equally as shallow as his wife, dismisses his newborn child after realizing that she is a girl. Fast forwarding five years, Matilda is now an avid reader and curious young girl, although she lives quite unhappily with her parents and dull brother, Michael. The Wormwoods are oblivious to how gifted their daughter is, and instead bombard her with insults and verbal abuse. To get back at her mean-spirited parents, Matilda dumps her mother’s hydrogen peroxide in her father’s hair oil, causing Mr. Wormwood’s hair to turn bright green (“Naughty”).

From the very start of this imaginative musical, The Costumer will ensure that your audience is immediately transported to Matilda’s quirky world with the help of our fabulous rental costumes! The Costumer’s rental costumes for Matilda The Musical will transform each member of your cast from head to toe into their respective eccentric characters! Young Matilda will resemble that of a clever yet modest little girl in simple day dress and black tights, while her parents by contrast, will be costumed in attire that is just as ostentatious as their personalities. After shedding her hospital gown and pregnancy pad at the top of the show, Mrs. Wormwood will be dressed in a loud ruffled blouse, matching breakaway skirt, large tacky belt, contrasting fishnets, and colorful hair flowers. Her husband will appear equally as garish in a pork pie hat, and lurid plaid two-piece suit, contrasting vest, colored shirt, and mismatched plaid tie. To complete the Wormwood parents’ gaudy appearances, add rental wigs to your order! For Mrs. Wormwood, The Costumer provides an overdone, tacky, curly, blonde, half updo wig. For Mr. Wormwood, black pompadour style wigs are available, as well as green ones for when Matilda gets her revenge!

The story picks up at a local library where Matilda finds some solace. She spends time with the librarian, Ms. Phelps, and tells her a story about a world-famous Acrobat and Escapologist couple who yearn to have a child yet are unable to (“Acrobat Story I”). In order to distract themselves from their sadness and longing, the couple announce that they will perform a thrilling and dangerous new act. The following day is Matilda’s very first day at school (“School Song”). Matilda’s kind-hearted and caring teacher, Miss Honey, immediately recognizes how gifted Matilda is and recommends that she is placed in the top class with the older children (“Pathetic”). However, the child-hating, cruel, disciplinarian headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, dismisses this suggestion. The former world-champion hammer throwing headmistress then lectures Miss Honey on the importance of following the rules (“The Hammer”).

As more characters are introduced throughout Matilda’s tale, The Costumer will continue to provide quality rental costumes that will bring each role to life! Miss Honey will resemble that of the perfect, caring grade-school teacher in a modest cardigan, floral print day dress, and a pair of glasses. Blonde rental wigs with bangs are also available to complete Miss Honey’s look. Miss Trunchbull on the other hand, will resemble the hulking disciplinarian headmistress that every child fears in a stern brown coat dress, collared shirt, narrow tie, wide belt, green knee socks, and a padded chest to boot. Additionally, a tight brown bun styled rental wig can be added to your order to complete Miss Trunchbull’s intimidating look!

As the story progresses, Matilda must learn to stand up to her parents’ and Miss Trunchbull’s abuse with the help of her friends, Miss Honey, and some unexpected gifts of her own. Matilda’s tale is one that will captivate audiences of all ages with its classic story and unforgettable music and spectacle.
