Roald Dahl’s Matilda

Roald Dahl’s MatildaBook adaption by Dennis Kelly, music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. Based on the book Matilda by Roald Dahl. Life isn’t easy for Matilda Wormwood, a young girl whose impressive wit and wisdom are far beyond her years. Matilda’s parents are neglectful at best, but usually they are busy insulting and belittling poor Matilda for her love of reading. Mr. Wormwood is a sleazy used car salesman who deceives his customers, and Mrs. Wormwood, distracted by her dreams of ballroom dancing, is no better. Matilda’s cynical parents seem to prefer their eldest son Michael, who is dull and dense.

At school, Matilda becomes close to the librarian, Miss Phelps, who helps Matilda refine her powers of imagination. Matilda also garners the esteem of her sweet-tempered teacher, Miss Honey, who recognizes Matilda’s talent and recommends her for advanced classes. However, Miss Honey’s recommendation is overturned by the school’s child-hating, fear mongering headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. She terrorizes the students, including Matilda, with outrageous punishments meant to break their spirits.

During a tongue lashing from Miss Trunchbull, Matilda discovers that she can move objects with her mind! This astonishing power, combined with her intelligence and creativity, allows Matilda to band together with the help of her schoolmates, Miss Phelps, and Miss Honey to overthrow Miss Trunchbull’s regime and restore the school to a place of knowledge and friendship!
