Moana Jr. is a 60-minute musical adaptation of the 2016 Disney animated film, Moana. The show is designed for youth and children ensembles, and features all of the cherished songs of the film, like “How Far I’ll Go,” “Shiny,” and “You’re Welcome.” The brilliance of the show’s music is attributed to Tony, Grammy, and Pulitzer prize-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’I, and Mark Mancina. The story of Moana is based on the beliefs and cultures of Polynesia and pays tribute to the rich history of Oceania. The film was developed in collaboration with Oceanic Trust (an organization of anthropologists, cultural practitioners, historians, linguists, and choreographers from the Pacific Islands) to ensure accurate representation of Polynesian culture. The very same attention to detail and respect for the culture was carried over to the development of Moana’s stage adaptation. Moana Jr. is a stellar musical choice for community theatres, scholastic productions, and theatres for young audiences.

The musical follows the story of Moana, the brave and strong-willed princess of the island of Motunui. When a blight strikes her beloved island, Moana charts a course across the Pacific Ocean in order to save her people and discover the truth about her heritage. Along her journey, she meets the powerful demigod Maui, and the two team up to return an ancient relic to a Polynesian goddess. Moana Jr. is an epic tale of self-discovery, camaraderie, and bravery, and is sure to inspire any audience.

The story begins as the Chief Ancestors of Motonui and the Ancestor Ensemble recount an ancient tale of gods and goddesses from over a thousand years ago. Through the song, “In the Beginning…”, the ancestors tell of Maui, a shapeshifting demigod, who stole the heart of the goddess Te Fiti, also known as the mother island. While attempting to escape with the goddess’s heart, a demon of earth and fire named Te Ka attacked Maui. During their battle, Te Fiti’s heart was lost to the sea. The Ancestors explain that because the villagers of Motonui feared the wrath of the violent Te Ka, they islanders decided to stop voyaging on the open waters. The defeated Maui subsequently disappeared, and The Ocean was left to guard the heart of Te Fiti, thus concluding the Ancestors’ tale.

From the very start of this fantastical tale of ancient gods and goddesses, The Costumer will ensure that your audience is immediately transported to the Moana’s Pacific island world with our eye-catching rental costumes! Your cast of Ancestors will look like spirits from the past with muted color peasant pants and tunics for males, and similarly subdued colored dresses for females, all complete with accompanying sashes and hip scarves. Chief Ancestors will be adorned with distinctive beaded collars and island-themed headpieces.

Once the Ancestors finish telling their tale, the action shifts to the present where we meet the titular Moana. The Ocean entrusts the heart of Te Fiti to the girl on Motonui (“Tulou Tagaloa”). Although the Ocean and the young Moana’s strong shared bond, her parents, Chief Tui and Sina, view the girl’s bequeathed duty as dangerous and forbid her from traveling beyond the island’s reef. Instead, Moana’s parents and the other villagers encourage her to embrace her future role as chief of their village and to find happiness on the island that she has always known through the song “Where You Are.”

However, Monotui soon finds itself in peril as the island’s crops are struck with blight and the villagers experience shortages of fish. Moana contemplates breaking her parents’ rules and voyaging out sea in order to find more fish and help her village (“How Far I’ll Go”). After a failed attempt to push out to sea with her friends Pua and Hei Hei, Gramma Tala reveals to her granddaughter their ancestors’ past. After growing weak, Tala encourages Moana to draw courage from her inner voice and fulfill her destiny of returning the heart of Te Fiti. After Tala’s subsequent death, an emboldened Moana sets sail to save her island by returning the heart. Along the way, Moana will meet and team up with the charming yet arrogant demigod, Maui, as they journey through the Realm of Monsters, encounter treacherous seas, and ultimately confront the dangerous Te Ka.

With the help of The Costumer’s rental costumes, all of Moana’s magical characters will come to life! With a coral-colored and Pacific print peasant top, matching peasant and grass skirt, and her trademark beaded necklace with a blue gem, Moana will look like she stepped right out of her animated source material!
