School of Rock is a rock musical based on the 2003 film by the same name written by Mike White and starring Jack Black. The musical features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Glenn Slater, and book by Julian Fellowes. The story follows an unemployed rock singer and guitarist named Dewey Finn who while pretending to be a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school, discovers that his students are musically gifted. Upon making this discovery, Dewey forms a band amongst his fifth-grade pupils and enters them into an upcoming Battle of the Bands contest. The musical made its Broadway debut at the Winter Garden Theatre on December 6th, 2015 and was nominated for multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of Musical, and Best Actor in a Musical.

The story begins at a boisterous rock concert where the band No Vacancy is performing. During one of the band’s songs, the guitarist, Dewey Finn, keeps attempting to upstage the lead singer, much to the rest of the band’s chagrin. Following the gig, the band all agrees to kick Dewey out after he leaves the stage. The following morning, Dewey is sound asleep in his bedroom until he is awoken by his best friend, Ned Schneebly, and Ned’s tyrannical dictatorial girlfriend, Patty Di Marco. Dewey is living in Ned and Patty’s apartment, and he is behind on rent which infuriates Patty. She demands that Dewey pay up soon while Ned cowers behind her. After the couple leaves, Dewey starts to go about his day which only leads to more misfortune to befall upon him. He learns that not only has he been kicked out of No Vacancy, but he has also been fired from his job at the local record store. Nonetheless, Dewey continues to dream about one day getting his big break and achieving his dream of becoming a rock and roll superstar (“When I Climb to the Top of Mount Rock”). Later on, Dewey receives a call from the principal of the prestigious prep school, the Horace Green school. Principal Rosalie Mullins asks to speak with Ned, stating that her school has a substitute teacher position available to him that pays over $900 a week. Realizing that the money is more than enough to cover his rent, Dewey poses as Ned and accepts the job.

From the very start of this tale about a rock and roll slacker, The Costumer will immediately transport your audience to School of Rock’s melodical world! Our rental costumes for productions of School of Rock will transform each and every member of your ensemble into their respective characters from Dewey’s rocking world! When Dewey first appears onstage with his fellow band members, he will resemble your typical rock and roll guitarist with a leather jacket, rock band t-shirt, and his favorite pair of jeans. The rest of No Vacancy will be decked out in flashy rock and roll outfits that will make Dewey’s ensemble appear conservative by comparison. Dewey’s best friend Ned will mirror the look of a well put-together academic in a conservative sweater vest, button-down shirt, and sport coat, and his girlfriend Patty will appear as a stern businesswoman in a professional women’s suit.

The action soon shifts to Horace Green School, where parents drop off their children at the beginning of the school day and Rosalie tries her very best to maintain order among the commotion (“Horace Green Alma Mater”). Dewey arrives as “Ned” for his first day as a substitute teacher, although he shows up both late, rather hungover, and completely unprepared to start his job. Rosalie warns “Ned” that he will be expected to deliver an education to his students that meets the school’s high standards (“Here at Horace Green”). Dewey then enters his new classroom of thirteen young students and introduces himself as Mr. Schneebly. The students are immediately wary of their new instructor and his lackadaisical demeanor, prompting the uptight Summer Hathaway to attempt to explain just how their class is run. Dewey is repulsed by the school’s rigid system, and with no food to treat his raging hangover, Dewey spends most of his day sleeping rather than teaching. With no supervision, the children run wild.

As the story shifts to the halls and classrooms of the prestigious Horace Green School, The Costumer’s fabulous rental costumes will help create the atmosphere of the preppy setting! Principal Rosalie Mullins will greet her students and their parents in a prim and proper suit, tailored exactly for a prep school principal. The rest of Dewey’s students, like Summer Hathaway, will take the stage in matching preppy school uniforms, complete with neat white button-down shirts, and coordinating sweaters and ties.

As Dewey’s story continues, he begins to discover his students’ hidden musical talents, and he upends Horace Green’s rigid standards. However, he must also continue to hide the fact from his students, their parents, Rosalie, and Ned that he is acting as an imposter.

This is only a mere glimpse at what The Costumer has to offer for productions of School of Rock!
