Seussical is a musical comedy based off of the many classic children’s stories by prolific author and cartoonist, Dr. Seuss. Most of the musical’s plot follows the story of Horton Hears a Who! and Horton Hatches the Egg! while incorporating many other timeless Dr. Seuss tales, such as The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Green Eggs and Ham, and many more! Seussical features music, lyrics, and book by the Tony Award-winning duo, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, the team behind Ragtime, Once on This Island, My Favorite Year, and Anastasia. Seussical premiered on Broadway in 2000 and has since two U.S. national tours and a West End production. Seussical is frequently produced by scholastic and community theatre groups, and Musical Theatre International currently offers the licensing rights to the 2002 U.S National Tour Version.

The story begins as a large red and white striped hat appears on the center of an empty stage. A Boy steps onto the stage noticing the inviting and whimsical hat. He is drawn to it and as he approaches, The Cat in the Hat suddenly materializes. The impish Cat quips, “I can see that you’ve got quite a mind for your age,” and they begin singing about the power of imagination (“Oh the Thinks You Can Think”). Throughout the opening number, various famous characters from Dr. Seuss’ tales are introduced: Horton the Elephant; Gertrude McFuzz, the one-feather tailed bird; the Whos of Whoville, including the Mayor and his wife; General Genghis Khan Schmitz; Mayzie La Bird; the Sour Kangaroo and the Citizens of the Jungle of Nool. At the opening number’s closing, the Boy and The Cat in the Hat use their combined imaginations to transport the audience to the setting for the story’s beginning: The Jungle of Nool.

As the jungle materializes, Horton is found splashing happily in a pool. Suddenly, he hears a distant cry for help (“Horton Hears a Who”). Horton follows the mysterious cry to a miniscule speck of dust floating on the wind and realizes that there are tiny people living on the speck: the tiny citizens of Whoville who are so small that they can’t be seen. Upon making this discovery, Horton vows to protect the tiny people and places Whoville carefully on a soft clover just as Sour Kangaroo and her baby arrive. Horton explains his discovery and the Sour Kangaroo thinks he is delusional for believing such a thing. She and the rest of the Jungle Citizens, including the bad-boy monkey Wickersham Brothers, mock Horton for talking to a speck of dust (“Biggest Blame Fool”). Being the mischievous narrator that he is, The Cat in the Hat takes on the persona of a talk show host during the number, interviewing everyone in the jungle, including Mayzie La Bird and her Bird Girls providing backing vocals. All the while, Gertrude McFuzz, Horton’s neighbor, is the only one who stands up for Horton, although she is not noticed by anyone, including Horton.
