Wizard of Oz: Frank L. Baum's iconic tale about finding what we want inside ourselves comes to the stage in this musical adaptation of the 1939 motion picture. Farm girl Dorothy Gale is knocked unconscious in a tornado and transported to the magical land of Oz. On her way to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard how to get back home to Kansas, she meets the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion, each of whom decide to ask the Wizard for advice. Music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg and book mostly by Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson and Edgar Allan Woolf.

            The Wizard of Oz film premiered in 1939 and spawned several musical adaptations to the stage, most popularly with the book by John Kane, music by Harold Arlen, and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg. Based on the L. Frank Baum novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the classic musical is forever woven into the fabric of American popular culture and musical theatre. With unforgettable songs like “Somewhere over the Rainbow,” and “Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” any retelling of Dorothy Gale’s adventures in the Land of Oz will have any audience feeling like there truly is no place like home.

 

            Dorothy’s fantastical tale begins at her Uncle Henry and Auntie Em’s farm in Kansas. Dorothy tries to run away from home after the family’s neighbor, Almira Gulch, threatens to euthanize Dorothy’s beloved dog Toto for biting Ms. Gulch. Dorothy flees with Toto to ensure his safety, but after meeting with the kind fortune teller, Professor Marvel, Dorothy returns back to the farm to find that a tornado is approaching her home. Dorothy and her home are sent spinning into the air by the twister. Dorothy awakens after the storm to find that her house has dropped in a strange and colorful new land: Munchkinland in the wonderful Land of Oz. Upon seeing this peculiar, bright and beautiful new world, Dorothy tells her beloved dog, “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” Thus, Dorothy’s wondrous adventures in the Land of Oz begins.

 

            From one scene to the next, The Costumer will provide every actor with quality costumes accurate to the style of the classic characters and support the creative vision of the director. From the opening scenes of the Kansas homestead and Dorothy’s timeless ballad “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” audiences with be transported back to early 20th century America through the Gale family’s and farmhands’ period-appropriate work clothes. Audiences will then experience a stark contrast between the rustic farm life of Kansas to the bright technicolor landscape of Munchkinland in the Land of Oz. A sea of brightly colored Munchkins in fluorescent skirts, capes, breeches, aprons, vests, hats and much more will entrance viewers as the ensemble exclaims “Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead.” Dorothy Gale will also be adorned in her timeless and iconic blue gingham and white blouse. Add wigs to your rental order to complete the look!

 

            The Costumer will not disappoint any director, ensuring that Glinda the Good Witch of the North enchants all during her entrance with her beautiful pale pink gown complete with sparkling tiara and wand. Any actress embodying the beautiful Good Witch will be sure to cast a spell on any audience as she guides young Dorothy through this strange new land.

 

            After Dorothy is celebrated for accidentally dropping her house on the Wicked Witch of the East by the Munchkins and the Glinda, the villainous Wicked Witch of the West makes her appearance. Protected by the Wicked Witch of the East’s ruby red slippers, Dorothy is safe from the wrath of the Witch of the West for now, however the Wicked Witch of the West vows vengeance on Dorothy, and her little dog too.

 

           The Costumer will be sure to make your Wicked Witch of the West as nefarious as possible with an all-black Victorian style dress complete with a classic pointed hat, striped stockings, and shoe buckles.            In order to escape the Wicked Witch and get home safely to her family in Kansas, Dorothy must follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City and ask the Wonderful Wizard of Oz for help. Along her journey to the Wizard, Dorothy meets her loyal sidekicks and friends, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. The Costumer will make sure each of these timeless characters look their very best. With Scarecrow’s raggedy patched up clothes overflowing with straw, the Lion’s padded fur body, and the Tin Man’s shiny armor, each of these classic characters will look their very best onstage!
